Der Rhein-(Maas-)Schelde-Kanal als geplante Infrastrukturzelle von 1946–1985

Der Titel dieses Buches verweist auf die Forschungsanliegen: die Aufarbeitung der Historie des Rhein-Maas-Schelde-Kanals sowie das Vorantreiben der historischen Infrastrukturforschung. Im Zentrum letzterer steht das „Zellenmodell“: Infrastruktur wird als Gefüge einer variablen Anzahl von Zellen interpretiert. Eine dieser Zellen ist die gescheiterte West-Ost-Magistrale Rhein-Maas-Schelde-Kanal, die Diskussionen hierzu umfassen vier Phasen: 1626–1838, 1839–1938, 1939–1963 und 1964–1985. Wesentliche Diskussionsaspekte ab 1939 stellten einerseits die Abriegelung der ursprünglichen Nord-Süd-Verbindung Antwerpens zum Rhein im Jahr 1865/67 durch die Niederlande dar, die mit dieser Maßnahme zielgerichtet das belgische Nachbarland vom Handel über den Binnenwasserweg abschnitten. Andererseits fand zeitgleich zwischen den deutschen, belgischen und niederländischen Städten der Rhein-Maas-Region ein kontrovers geführter Interessenkonflikt um die Anbindung der eigenen Stadt an den Antwerpener Seehandel statt

Does a border always have to be visible in order to speak of a border area or a border region? The working definitions of border areas and border regions presented in the following article also refer to other approaches. To illustrate this, I analyse the Kahlgrund as a border area neighbouring Franconia and the Low Countries. Additionally, I will analyse two other regions in a comparative but asymmetrical approach. Depending on the example, the temporal focus ranges from the late Middle Ages to about 1650. Initially, Franconia is presented as a region with border areas, but by no means as a border region, on the basis of different boundaries. In a further section, the Kahlgrund is presented as a so-called interface area – without a visible border. Finally, the situation of the Low Countries as a border region is examined

Der Beitrag befasst sich mit dem Ausbau Marktstefts zur Handels- und Binnenhafenstadt in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Das damals unscheinbare Winzerdorf, das erst 1726 das Marktrecht verliehen bekam, befand sich seit 1448 unter der Herrschaft der Markgrafen von Brandenburg-Ansbach. Erst ab 1711 begann die Obrigkeit in einen neuen Hafenplatz zu investieren. Ion microscopy with evolutionary-algorithm-based autofocusing

Ion microscopy is an established technique for laser focus diagnostics and the accurate, intensity-resolved measurement of laser ionization processes. In the present feasibility study, we discuss a new ion microscope design, which improves its resolution across a large range of magnifications and simplifies its operation. Instead of the common two einzel lens configuration, which is usually optimized for a fixed magnification, we propose a generic design consisting of an array of equally spaced ring electrodes, whose individually adjustable voltages are controlled by an evolutionary algorithm. In this way, we can realize aberration minimized magnifications between 25 and 100. Moreover, the algorithm can adjust the voltage settings under changing experimental conditions and facilitates autofocusing for user-defined magnification

Von historischen und kulturellen Konzeptionen strukturiert, durch politische Grenzen zerstückelt und geprägt von Kooperation und Konflikten sind Grenzräume ein komplexer Untersuchungsgegenstand. Der vorliegende Band versammelt geschichtswissenschaftliche, soziologische, ethnologische und informationswissenschaftliche Zugänge in zwölf Einzelbeiträgen und einer Schreibdiskussion. Neben theoretisch-methodischen Überlegungen stehen epochen- und auch disziplinübergreifend europäische Grenzräume im Fokus. Die Beiträge des Bandes analysieren diese Raum- und Grenzkonzeptionen empirisch fundiert mit Blick auf die soziale Konstruktion des Raums, die rechtlichen Verknüpfungen, die Alltagspraxis der Grenze, die Ausprägungen von Geschichtsbewusstsein und Geschichtskultur und die Inklusions- und Exklusionsdynamiken in verschiedenen Epochen.Borderlands are a complex subject to study. Handover training for medical students: A controlled educational trial of a pilot curriculum in Germany

Objective: The aim of this study was to implement and evaluate a newly developed standardised handover curriculum for medical students. We sought to assess its effect on students’ awareness, confidence and knowledge regarding handover. Design: A controlled educational research study. Setting: The pilot handover training curriculum was integrated into a curriculum led by the Departments of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (AI) at the University Hospital. It consisted of three modules integrated into a 4-week course of AI. Multiple types of handover settings namely end-of-shift, operating room/postanaesthesia recovery unit, intensive care unit, telephone and discharge were addressed. Participants: A total of n=147 fourth-year medical students participated in this study, who received either the current standard existing curriculum (no teaching of handover, n=78) or the curriculum that incorporated the pilot handover training (n=69). Outcome measures: Paper-based questionnaires regarding attitude, confidence and knowledge towards handover and patient safety were used for pre-assessment and post-assessment. Results: Students showed a significant increase in knowledge (p<0.01) and self-confidence for the use of standardised handover tools (p<0.01) as well as accurate handover performance (p<0.01) among the pilot group. Conclusion: We implemented and evaluated a pilot curriculum for undergraduate handover training. Students displayed a significant increase in knowledge and self-confidence for the use of standardised handover tools and accuracy in handover performance. Further studies should evaluate whether the observed effect is sustained across time and is associated with patient benefit
